He has been writing since he was five years old when he got an old manual typewriter. Some of his earliest memories are of himself clacking away on the typewriter. His biography tells of how he loved the look of the sharp, black letters against the crisp, white paper.

Roland Smith lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Marie, on a small farm. Roland is very much involved in working with animals. Before becoming a writer, he worked at a children's zoo for twenty years. He says that all his animal experiences have given him many wonderful ideas for books. He has written more than ten books evolving animals, some being "Whales", "Sea Otter Rescue", and "Elephants".

In his biography, Roland Smith states that he writes about topics that are important to him and his family. He also says that he specifically writes about his interests. That is why he LOVES writing about animals. He loves them because he worked at a children's zoo for a very long time.  During his time at the zoo, he learned to care and love the animals that he kept.  We feel that Roland Smith is and exceptional author and human being.
